"Mess Around" - Ray Charles blues piano cover by Peter Hostage
Here's my take on “Mess Around.” “Mess Around” is a cover of the Ray Charles classic the he originally recorded on May 17, 1953 at Atlantic Studio in NewYork. The song was written by Atlantic president Ahmet Ertegun who used the pseudonym A. Nugetre. It was modeled on a Pete Johnson riff and “Cow Cow Blues” by Charles “Cow Cow Davenport,” which was one of the first big boogie-woogie hits in 1928. The creation of this classic was illustrated in the biopic “Ray.” "Mess Around" was used in the John Candy film "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" in a scene while John is driving; and that scene was parodied in the recent movie "Ted 2." “Mess Around” was covered by many artists including The Animals; Dr. John on his 1973 New Orleans tribute album “Gumbo;” and Professor Longhair on his 1976 album “Rock 'n' Roll Gumbo.”
Here are my latest videos. In these videos you’ll see me performing the different instruments “live to video.” This means that I’m actually playing what you are seeing and hearing, not “syncing.” Most of the music is written by myself, but sometimes I’ll perform a cover.

is a jazz pianist/vocalist, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and music educator. He has been making music since the early 1970’s and has 6 albums (and counting) to his name. Peter finds his inspiration in that place where jazz and blues meet, and sometimes anywhere on the roots and branches of jazz and blues. He lives in New Hampshire, USA, and shares his music with the world by creating videos of his songs and compositions, that show him performing all of the (real) instruments live to camera.
