Friday night (Nov.16) my wife Maria and I went to see JD McPherson at the Belleville Congregational Church in Newburyport. The church does a roots music series in their church hall, built in 1867, and it is really cool.
JD McPherson is a fast rising star playing a style mix of fifties rock ‘n’ roll, rockabilly and blues. He’s a great singer/guitarist from Oklahoma, and he has a very solid band anchored by rocker veteran Jimmy Sutton, who produced his album Signs & Signifiers, available on Rounder Records.
They played two very solid sets of good retro rockin’ music, and it was hard to sit down. The sold out crowd was diggin’ it all. During the break the band announced that they just received word that they will be on the Dave Letterman show Dec. 4, and on Jay Leno Dec. 13. The record is to be reviewed in an upcoming Rolling Stone and the band has been labeled as “an artist to watch.”
Check out their video of “North Side Gal,” which has already gotten nearly 1 million views!
Belleville Roots will be presenting Ruthie Foster on Dec. 6.
